It’s Earth Day!  Every year on April 22, men, women, and children collect garbage, plant trees, clean up coral reefs, show movies, sign petitions, and plan for a better future for our planet.  Some schools and communities celebrate Earth Day for a whole week to expand the time frame that people focus on the earth and how they can preserve it.   The holiday transcends national boundaries, forcing people in every country to evaluate their role in preserving the health of this earth.  Take a few tips from Whooptee on ways you can help preserve the earth, because we only get one!

  1. Recycle: Just by reading the word, you can picture the three circulating arrows indicated the “reuse, recycle, renew” tag. If you don’t already,  start small.  Keep cloth bags in your trunk to use a the grocery store.  Ask your waste management service about getting a garbage can for recyclables.

  2. Donate: The word donate contains “don’t,” as in don’t throw everything in the trash.  Attempt to “up-cycle” an old custom t-shirt to use as a dress for your daughter.  Designate items to give to charity.  One man’s trash is another man’s treasure

  3. Beware of vampires:  Not the blood sucking kind we see on True Blood, but the energy zappers all around your house.  When small appliances aren’t in use, unplug them to keep from wasting energy . . . and save yourself a little cash!

  4. Water wasters:  Water is a resource rich countries like ours take for granted.  First stop by buying bottled water.   The bottles, though recyclable, aren’t friendly to the environment.  Buy a reusable bottle and fill it throughout the day.  Secondly, turn the water off while washing; next time you’re brushing your teeth, taking a shower or washing your hands, find the opportunity to shut it off.

  5. Go Green: Now this is where we specialize.  Buy organic clothing that’s made in America; it’s locally grown and pesticide free.  That means we’re not adding exhaust to the air to ship cargo thousands of miles; no pesticides means no harmful chemical polluting the soil.
